James Barnes Obituary

James Allen Barnes, age 51, of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 3, 1974, in Phenix City, James was the beloved son of Cathy Key and Jon Barnes. From a young age, he displayed a strong work ethic and a natural ability to take on any task before him. A true jack of all trades, James embraced many roles throughout his life, but in recent years he found his calling as a truck driver. This career suited him well, reflecting both his perseverance and his appreciation for the open road.

At the center of James’s life was the love he held for his family. He shared a deep and unwavering bond with his wife, Aimee Lee Herrin Barnes, who was his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and resilience. James was immensely proud of his children—Jade Barnes (wife Kait Barnes), Chase Barnes, Destiny Grey, and Kaitlin Hampton—and his greatest joy came from watching them grow and build lives of their own. His role as “Pops” to his cherished granddaughters, Oaklynn Wise and Ashleigh Grey, brought him endless happiness and pride.

In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, James is survived by his parents, Cathy Key and Jon Barnes; his brothers Eric Hayes (wife Deanna), Matt Radford, and Jeffery Hayes; his sisters Sheri Cain (husband Christopher) and Amanda York (husband Randy); along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever treasure his memory.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Christopher Russell; his sister, Sherri Sauter; and his stepmother, Andrea Barnes.

James will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, his love of the outdoors, and his enjoyment of hunting and fishing. He had a passion for music and a gift for bringing people together, effortlessly forming connections with everyone he met. His determination and his ability to see the good in others left a lasting impression on those blessed to know him.

Though James’s earthly journey has come to an end, his spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and friends. His laughter, his strength, and the love he gave so freely will remain a guiding light for those he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will be carried forward with love and gratitude.
