Waverly Alfred Mosley was born October 23, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Izola and Lawrence Mosley. He was the tenth of twelve children. Waverly was baptized at Alphonse Catholic Church in St. Louis. The Mosely family began their trek to Dayton, Ohio when Waverly was a young boy. Waverly often told stories that because there were so many of them, they took the train ride from St. Louis in groups.
Waverly attended St. John Catholic School and church. As an adult, Waverly joined Resurrection Church and was a member of St. Benedict the Moor. A lifelong Catholic, Waverly held a strong commitment to his faith and encouraged that same faith in others.
Waverly was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar Highschool. He spent more than 30 years in the grocery business, in various roles for local grocers, Liberal Markets and Nickley's IGA. Waverly came out of retirement in 2010, at the request of a local rabbi, to assist with the driving services for senior members of the Greater Dayton Jewish community. He was so well loved by the Jewish Federation of Dayton, that they tried to coax him into shifting to part time, instead of retiring in 2019. After his "second" retirement, he began traveling the world with his daughters. One of his favorite stories to tell, was of experiencing mass led by Pope Francis and visiting Pisa, Italy. Waverly lived life pragmatically. His favorite saying was: "It is, what it is"!
Waverly was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Sherry E. Mosely. Waverly leaves to cherish his loving memory; daughters, Lynne R. Mosley and Robin S. Mosley; brother, Sherman Mosley; a host of nieces and nephews, church family and friends.
